Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd: The Forge Garden
- Client
- Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd
Internationally renowned Sheffield engineering company, Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd was one of many companies in the Don Valley badly affected by the floods of 2007. The company’s response was to work with nature to reduce the risk of flooding by creating a one-acre wildlife area at the heart of the 64-acre site.
Designed by Wildscapes, the ‘Forge Garden’ now helps to protect the site from flooding and provides a corporate garden facility for both staff and visitors to enjoy.
Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems collect run-off from an the car park adjacent to the Forge Garden- channelling into the wetland area. The scheme reduces the contribution to storm surges in an innovative, attractive and sustainable way.
This new green space forms precious wildlife habitats and adds a splash of real colour within this important industrial site.
Mosaic of habitats introduced:
Woodland, wetland, meadow and specialist perennial planting (working in conjunction with Nigel Dunnett) were introduced to the brownfield site. Our ecologists carried out ongoing monitoring at Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd and support the company with its ecological needs.
Recycle and reuse!
Our design incorporates the innovative use of large industrial artefacts recovered from the site.
