Warm spring brings survey season forward

Date
Wednesday, 3 August 2011

“The effect of this year’s record-breaking hot spring is that many plants have bloomed prematurely, meaning they will die back earlier, and thus shortening the Phase 1 survey season”
                                 - Nicky Rivers, South Yorkshire Bio-Diversity Coordinator

If you’re developing a plot of land or working on a planning application, now is the time to think about any environmental issues you might encounter and to book the necessary ecological surveys.

Our ecologists can identify potential problems at an early stage to reduce unnecessary delays. By maintaining a productive working relationship with regulatory bodies such as Natural England, the Environment Agency and other key stakeholders we are able to deliver a more informed, conscientious and practical solution.

Sheffield Wildlife Trust Living Don Manager, Rob Miller, said, “This year’s unexpected hot spring has had a knock-on affect on the seven sites we manage. The season has effectively been brought forward so we’ve had to schedule management work that would normally have been done later in the year.”

If you miss the opportunity this summer then your development could be on hold until next spring. Phase 1 Surveys must take place in spring and summer months when habitats are more readily identifiable. It may feel like summer has just begun but blackberries are already ripening and days are rapidly shortening. Autumn may be upon us quicker than usual!

We would love to help you avoid reaching a frustrating standstill with your development, waiting for the survey season to come around again.

So please give us a call on 0114 279 2667 to discuss how we can help.
