Walking On Water

- Wednesday, 9 February 2011

Early this week Belinda Wiggs, Wildscapes’ Senior Ecologist visited the flood defence system at Centenary Riverside, to assess how the recent rainfall had affected the site. The depth of the main lake had increased by half a metre, completely covered the boardwalk that crosses it. As shown on the image to the left, Belinda bravely crossed the boardwalk which is usually a half a foot above the water surface.
This additional water would previously have run into the River Don. In June 2007 before this flood plain was created, extremely heavy rainfall caused huge and costly problems as homes and businesses were flooded in many areas of Rotherham. Even the town centre was under water and several shops were badly damaged.
